Tylorstown Band were competing in the Championship section, and so we had plenty of time to watch the world cup rugby in the morning before heading off.

The First Section and Championship section results were together, and after awarding two Life Members for their contribution to banding and the West Wales Association, they announced the results for Section 1. City of Cardiff first, Ynyshir 2nd and Peclawdd third.  Gareth Ritter was awarded the conductors trophy, but not after running off with the first place shield! Don’t worry he gave it back.

For the Championship Section it was a close run thing with four points separating the top three places. First place and the Conductors trophy went to Burry Port Band, second place to Pontardulais and third to Tylorstown Band!  Congratulations to Gary Davies who also conducted Llwydcoed, winning the Second Section and gaining the Conductors Trophy.

It was a great evening, with crafty home-made soup, crochet lessons for another friend, some inventive knitting with no pattern, and I was catching up on a really old cross stitch of Winnie the Pooh and friends.  I chose this as I though it would be easier to get into than the many shaded wolves, though I forgot that there were special three-quarter stitches on the chart! I was fun, and I loved helping out with the crochet.

That was quite hard, as I am left-handed, and she is right, so it was following actions, not exact copying, I’m sure we will muddle through, she was concentrating so much, her coffee went cold, mine too!

The chef said that she would like to learn cross stitch, but was put off by the counting, so I’m going to make a kit for her to get to the stitching, before adding in counting. I’ll draw onto the aida, so there is no counting, and the fun sewing bit can get started straight away.

I hope we can get a few more friends together next time, as you can see, I can’t wait.

Yesterday, Tylorstown Band competed in the Welsh Open in Porthcawl for the first time for five years, thanks to the promotion to the national First section we achieved last year. The eleven bands competing gave their all in their 20 minute programmes, entertaining the audience all day.

We are looking forward to seeing Pencampwriaeth Bandiau Pres Cymru: Digwyddiadau ’11 next Saturday 19:25 on S4C, subtitles and all, to see some of the performances we didn’t see.

Senior Trophy

There is a new take on an old classic for the Senior Trophy, as the competing bands lock horns on a recent new arrangement of the Berlioz overture ‘Benvenuto Cellini’ by Dr Christian Jenkins.

This will be first time the new arrangement will have been performed at a major contest.

The Spring Festival takes place at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool on Saturday 14th May.

I am really looking forward to the run up to Christmas, as I always enjoy the Christmas Lights in peoples windows and gardens.  I am planning to try and capture these this year, so expect to see some fine examples of festive fun, both community and home made!

I also need to revisit my inspiration words and maybe add to them.  I needed an image for Time the other day, so that is something that I will seek out.  I also want to take photos of signs and words in our environment.

I would have loved to enter the BBC Countryfile competition, but I didn’t think that I had anything I could enter. The nearest I had for the ‘moment of magic’ for a nature subject was this. I shall be looking towards entering next year I hope.

I would love some suggestions for locations or items to take, so don’t be shy, leave a note and we’ll see what we can come up with.
